Samsung Gem For Verizon Will Sit Alongside Big Brother Fascinate

8

Even some of Verizon’s lesser-known, entry level phones get the “leak” treatment as today we’re learning they’ll be bringing the Samsung Gem – an Android 2.1-powered handset with TouchWiz 3.0 – to their subscribers. This phone is definitely no Samsung Fascinate – Verizon’s own Galaxy S smartphone set to come out sometime this summer (rumored to be September) but I’m sure there are a few people out there who wouldn’t mind throwing one of these into their pockets on the way out of the door.

Unfortunately, there are no other details to mill at this time. The only thing we can gather from the shot is that it will have a screen sized from 3.2 to 3.5 inches and that it will enjoy a higher resolution than other phones with similarly-sized displays. Oh, and that’s a neat little Superman-shaped trackpad in the center, if I do say so myself.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Seems to look like it has a full keyboard somewhere in there, phone looks a tad thick from the left side and has huge borders around the screen that must signal something more packaged on the inside.

Still waiting for Verizon to wow me with something this holiday when my 1-year Eris contract is up.

  2. Hmm, interesting, but I’m still going with the Fascinate. I’ve had enough of “low end” devices with my Eris. I want something that can keep up with me.

  3. It’s a crime for the Fascinate to be coming out late September if that is truly the case. I’ve been waiting for this launch since the big Samsung Event. Why we have to wait for them to finish their love affair with Moto is ridiculous!

  4. Touch Wiz 3.0…

  5. just be patient, it will soon arive lol. The SGS will probably be the best phone available anywhere for quite a while.

  6. I am dying for the fascinate. I just want to Droid 2 to come out already so people can start talking about the real blockbuster phone on Verizon’s network.

  7. I am also waiting for the fascinate to come out to replace my Eris. Unless by that time they are talking about a Nexus 2 release

  8. I have the AT&T Galaxy S (Captivate). Really incredible (no pun intended) I switched from verizon to get it.
But in the past week of having it- AT&T signal sucks, and the GPS on this phone ships broken. So- for you Verizon folks: (1) Yes this phone rocks (2) Maybe they will fix the GPS on it and ship it with 2.2- so maybe the wait for another month(+) is worth it.
If this thing doesn’t get better (GPS fix) in a few weeks- I’m really thinking I should return it and go back to my VX3100 while I’m waiting for the Fascinate…
    Just my two cents.

    oh- and
In brief- if you have this GPS problem, please CALL your carrier and tell them about it, and CONTACT SAMSUNG and tell them about it. It can only help to resolve it if they hear from more customers experiencing the problem(s) with GPS on the Galaxy S series.

(My experience: Hacks and work-arounds tried; all that is clear is that GPS on this phone ships broken. FAIL.)
