I am between the iPhone4 and an Android phone right now and i really really want to stay in the open source and not fall into the trappings of Apple BUT now a major stumbling block has arisen for me. The iPhone 4 has a better camera and video. I’ve seen a cross section of examples and the iPhone 4 wins out. Also i want to take my phone traveling overseas and at&t works over there. Ugh!!!

@QuantumRand Aside from the front facing camera…the AT&T Samsung Captivate pretty much stomps the DroidX in every category. How come it isn’t upgrade worthy to you? I’ve had it since release and all my friends and co-workers with DroidX and EVO’s are jealous of the screen and graphics.

I think at&t would want its iPhone customers to switch to Android. AT&T has to pay a much higher subsidy to Apple.

QuantumRand — I suggest you take another look at the Big T’s website. They have a very, very nice Android phone from Samsung’s “Galaxy S” line they call the Captivate. Check it out … has all the specs you mention except no LED flash. 4″ Super AMOLED screen, 1Ghz Hummingbird processor, 16GB on-board with support for 32GB MicroSD cards. Some reviews quibble but the 5MP camera takes pretty darn good photos with some nice controls borrowed from Samsung’s point-and-shoot line-up. Even without LED flash it handles low light reasonable well and I think you’ll find it’s not the deal breaker you think it is.

I’d be completely happy with a Droid X for AT&T. I’ve stuck on EDGE for almost a year now, simply because AT&T has the crappiest Android phones, not worth re-upping a contract for.

Is it too much to ask for an Android with a 3.7+” screen, Snapdragon+ class processor, HDMI output, and LED flash?

Sure, the Captivate comes close. Its processor and screen are arguably the best you’ll find right now, but no HDMI out (except with $50 cable) and no LED flash kills it.

Just a rumor but an AT&T employee told me that they might be getting a Droid X variant. I didn’t think it to be true, but with this, maybe?
