HTC Droid Eris owners it looks like you are next in line for an OTA update from Verizon, and no it isn’t Android 2.2 (you aren’t getting that lucky). Instead, come July 16th, you’ll be getting a handful of improvements to make your handset all that it can be for the time being.

How’s that for end of life? Pretty good, though we’re wary that this may in fact be the last little OTA treat Verizon and HTC push to the Eris.

  1. Better than nothing and more than expected. I’m just happy Eris got 2.1 at all.

  2. Now it would be nice if Sprint could follow suit with the HTC Hero and fix the dialer/keyboard lag, Bluetooth issues, and other glitches that have been present since the Android 2.1 update was released.

I won’t hold my breath for that though. Looks like I will be rooting in a few months anyway to Android 2.2.

  3. I sure hope it helps, although it doesn’t sound like it will be fixing the primary issues I am having with my Eris just being “buggy” I shall wait and see.

  4. Hopefully it will quiet the silent call whiners in the forum. The only problems I’ve had are lag related, I’ll probably have to wait for 2moro.2 to fix that.

  5. You would be whining too if you had the silent call bug (I do)

It might be the most irritating thing ever experienced on a phone. If this OTA fixes the issue I will be so happy…for a day or two

  6. who cares? I’m replacing my Eris with the Droid X on Thursday, and I’m sure I’ll never look back. the phone was a good introduction to Android, but is so outdated now I don’t even think it’s worth updating.

  7. I care. I’m keeping my Droid Eris until my 2 year contract ends and buy a 4G Android smartphone. I’ve never had the silent call bug or any lag issues, so I just hope this will shut up all the whiners in the forum.

  8. Well, I guess it’s better than nothing… The best thing I ever did for my phone was download Launcher Pro Beta… My phone is so fast now, I don’t have any buggy issues anymore…

  9. Only thing I really wanted to see is better battery life, because it was way better on power management before the 2.1 upgrade. Used to go to bed with still around 40-50%, and now I can barely make it through the day on a single charge.

  10. Hopefully this shuts up all the whiners that complain about people who have the silent call bug or lag issues.

  11. Does this also mean the sprint hero is at an end?

“Hopefully this shuts up all the whiners that complain about people who have the silent call bug or lag issues.”

Clearly you haven’t been in an emergency situation when you’re trying to dial out to 911 reporting a fatal car crash and your phone is struck with the silent call bug whose only remedy is to reboot the phone, which takes about 3 minutes and 30 seconds on average.

A phone’s top priority should be dialing out and accepting calls. period.

  13. I too never had any silent call bug. Ever. I am happy with my phone… not app heavy and pretty heavy usage (fb, gmail, internet, video).

I was sorta hoping deep down that we’d get 2.2. But I’ll be happy until contract renewal and then I’ll decide between another droid or an iPhone when they come to Verizon.

It’s a lot of people. THE PHONE function on OUR PHONE doesn’t work and nobody will do anything about it except give out a used version of the SAME PHONE. Wouldn’t that piss you off?

  15. The update wiped out all my contacts. Im so freaking pissed right now. I just want to be able to call someone and have internet. Argg! Why do adults go out of their way and buy their kids smartphones? I want my old phone back :(.

  16. Look…all of you who call us whiners. If you tried to make a call or receive a call numerous times a day and your phone was muted/silented…you would be blogging too. It is frustrating to have to take your battery out and reboot everytime that happens. Sometimes you don’t have time to wait for that. I know my phone plan is $300 a month so when it’s time to make a call, it would be nice to at least be able to do that. I don’t mind the lag, just make the freaking call. Maybe this update will work.

  17. @rf, Eris user: You’re not reading rr correctly. (S)he’s responding to the rude post by Tkieth. #comprehensionfail

I’m not experiencing the silent call bug (that I’m aware of), but it’s pretty darn laggy at times. I’ve been on leak 3 since it came out and am looking forward to the OTA update.

  18. I just got the Eris, new in the box from Verizon Wireless. I think, literally the last one they had. Anyway, it still has the original version of Android on it, and apparently there’s currently no way to upgrade to 2 point anything. The upgrade that WAS released for 2.1 has been (quoting HTC call center rep.) “removed, in anticipation of 2.2” He then went on to tell me there actually is no date for this release. “It could be tomorrow, it could be in 2 months”, he said. WTF?

  19. The new MR4 update is being leaked across the Web, however most sites offer no instructions for users on installation procedures. If you’d rather install the update yourself, rather than waiting for the OTA, you can download the update file and receive simple installation instructions here: http://eugeneorourke.com/blog/how-to-manually-install-droid-eris-mr4-update/

  20. Got the MR4 update last night, still having problems with gmail contacts not syncing with phone, when I try to sync I still get a very quick error message saying “contact sync is not available” and it continues to try and sync (depleting my battery very quickly since it keeps running in the background, so I have to turn contact auto sync off)–can anyone help with a suggestion on how to fix this, without doing a factory reset. Thank you.

  21. I still have not received the update to the htc 2.2. Does anyone know how they are rolling it out. When I go to update, it says i have the latest software. I still think that it’s ridiculous that a phone that is not very old will no be upgraded. I not only will never buy a htc phone again, Ill tell others not to bye one. I’m also getting rid of my google stock. I thought they were a good company and could control their product, but now i feel otherwise.

  22. I uploaded the “software update” a few months ago and it was a nightmare. I just got an update for a new download, I hope this fixes all the issues. With all the technology in the world I don’t see how this can happen. I hope they nip this shit in the but soon. I’m tired of paying for POOR SERVICE.
