Original Droid Catching Froyo In July

by Quentyn Kennemer on June 24th, 2010 at 6:05 am

Yesterday, one big question from the vocal group of original Motorola Droid owners was repeatedly asked: when are we going to get Froyo? Not to worry, my friends, because it appears Motorola has not forgotten about you: you’ll be able to get  your own taste of Android 2.2 this July.

That’s a very refreshing timeframe to hear after the newly-announced Droid X had only gotten a window of “late summer” (this is most likely due to the fact that it’s running NinjaBlur). I’m sure many of you will be happy to hear this, but I won’t be surprised if you take matters into your own hands and do a bit of hacking to get Froyo earlier than Motorola expects you to.

And Milestone will get it at christmas if we are lucky.

Great news for Droid 1 users. I’m betting on July 31st.

  • Sinned

    FINALLY!!!

  • John

    Careful they didn’t list which year… ;-)

I’m really looking forward to Froyo!

  • Matthew Lenz

Moto is full of it up to their ears and rest is toilet paper.

  • Kendall Spann

    did htc heros get 2.1?

  • Charles

Have been running Froyo on my droid for about a month and can say it really is nice…and flash is just the icing on the cake with it!

  • James

Guess I’ll be trying to figure out how to get my hands on something OTHER than my Droid Eris.. The Eris is gone and I’m sure will be forgotten..

  • Infojock

I WILL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT…BIG RED WILL FIND A WAY TO F*CK THIS UP FOR ALL OF US!!!

  • justin

If your rooted will you still get the ota update?

  • zenaxe

This is why I love the fact that the Droid runs the straight Google UI. Hopefully Moto will continue to support the large number of original Droid users with new updates due to the ease/low cost of creating new versions for it since the GUI is bone stock. I’ll run alternative launchers and widgets if I want to tweak the GUI.

  • IceCold

If they are saying July, we will see the OTA by the end of September…

  • ORoy

They didn’t specify July 2010. My bet is 2011.

  • Tim

    HA!

  • DrDiff

Rooted two days ago and over clocked to 1.0 ghz running Kangerade 1.1 Lost Google Listen and on the second day my data link stopped working. I hope the official build solves these problems.

  • Andy

The droid does not run a straight Google UI – its close, but you may have noticed we still only have 3 screens. I’m betting that the tethering features and other ‘money’ features will be ripped out before we get the 2.2 update.

I’m waiting for the CyanogenMod update to come out – it will be worth it just for the home screens and tethering. (and yes, I know there are many home replacement apps out there, but I shouldn’t need them for a couple of extra screens)

  • Jim

That screen could have come from anywhere.
I could make one that looks just like it saying 2.2 is already on the Droid and Gingerbread is coming out in July.
How about the whole screen or a message from Verizon, Motorola, Google. None of them have said anything since the 23rd conference yet you want me to believe this is real?
I don’t believe this garbage for one second.
And I say shame on phandroid for getting peoples hopes up on this.

    Here are some FACTS.
According to Motorola’s OWN list, 2.2 does not even exist.
The only thing we have been told is “late summer”.
When that is is anyone’s guess. My guess is Christmas, I suggest everyone to think the same, that way you don’t get disseminated when your celebrating Thanksgiving w/o any Froyo for dessert.

i really dont think that theyre going to announce it to be honest with yall. there wasnt really much warning with 2.1 was there…
