Droid Incredible Doesn’t Have Root, Actually… Yet, Anyway

5

It appears yesterday’s unveiling of the apparent first root for the HTC Droid Incredible was a huge false alarm. Jake Day – one of the developers impersonated in yesterday’s hoax – has posted on his personal blog that he has not yet achieved root and assures us that he’s still actively working on it.

The poster over at AllDroid impersonated Jake with the username “Jake Day” (that forum thread and the one over at XDA has since been deleted by moderators). Jake, however, simply uses “Jake” at AllDroid and many other forums. Chalk this one up to immature kids in the Android community (or scammers looking to get donations for nothing) and move along.

If you would like to continue to follow Jake’s developments on the HTC Incredible, be sure that you get all of the information straight from the horse’s mouth by following his blog. There, you can ensure that you’re always getting the most accurate information  you can from one of the top developers working on cracking the Incredible.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. What’s even worse than the initial incident was the reactionary sh!tstorm that followed by a bunch of uninformed people accusing this developer as being a scammer or a phony. It’s ok to be skeptical, but knee-jerk backlashes like what happened yesterday were uncalled for and hurts the community even worse. Jake (and others) has a lot of apologies owed to him by more than just the guy who impersonated him. Check sources, support known devs, and always remember DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS!

Are you f’ing kidding? No one (aside from the impersonator) owes that clown anything.

None of this would’ve happened in the first place if he hadn’t lied when he implied he had root by claiming he was testing overclocked kernels.

I’m not condoning some of the nasty stuff people said, but the fact remains that Jake is the one who lit the fuse.

  4. @werdemup – couldn’t agree more. I hope this bs isn’t distracting actual devs from doing actual development. Anyone who thinks the information from Jake’s blog wasn’t purposely misleading deserves to be parted with whatever money and/or phones they “donated”.

In fact, if you’re one of those people, don’t waste time contradicting my post; instead, head over to paypal and send Jake 50 bucks so he can buy some beers and get over this horrible incident that has forever tarnished his reputation as a key developer in the Android community.

  5. misteredj,
    I don’t think it is.

It’s obvious at this point Jake Day is no real developer. If he were, he’d probably be working with the other real devs (like Paul from modaco).

So he can compile kernels, big whoop. I’ve been compiling kernels for about 10 years now and guess what…. I’ve never written a single line of C code. So while I can whip you up kernels all day long, I wouldn’t have the slightest clue where to start when it comes to finding software vulnerabilities. IMO, I think the alldroid guys are over their heads. I don’t think they have any idea what they’re doing.

I’ve got my $200 donation ready for the dev(s) that pull it off first.
