Samsung Galaxy S Could Be Very Close To Launch

29

Ever since Samsung busted this hot item out at CTIA last month, we’ve been impressed and dying to know when we might finally be able to have the Samsung Galaxy S in our grasps. We got FCC approval for this thing a few weeks ago, but now the Global Certification Forum has given their stamp of approval to it, as well.

A nice tidbit of information that came out of the GCF clearance was that the phone would have hardware support for video telephony services. The Galaxy S  is poised to launch in several regions of the world – including Asia, Europe, North and South America, and Australia – and hopefully this clearance means we’ll be seeing it very soon.

[Update]: That is indeed a front-facing VGA camera.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Don’t the pictures clearly show what looks to be a camera on the front?

  2. @Steve I’m willing to bet LED notifications and a light sensor. As far as we know, there is no front-facing camera on the Samsung Galaxy S.

  3. Looks like an indicator light, not a camera.

  4. Just an advise Dont waste your money on any. after android 2.2 this monster will be outdated and you will join the line of waiting.

  5. There is a front facing camera, there’s a video on youtube from a samsung rep showing it off.

  6. @pt21 would you be so kind to link us to said video?

  7. I hope they add not only a front face camera but also a dual LED flash in the back 5.0MP camera!

How come a camera with HD recording capabilities has no flash???????

  8. @Quentyn: aren’t the light sensors and LED notifications also clearly shown on the photo (on the left hand side of the speaker)? (you can see it more clearly on some higher resolution images and different angles)

  9. @Steve indeed, I seem to have been mistaken on this one. Last I heard of it from CTIA, I didn’t even hear anything about it.

  10. I agree with Steve. There are two shapes. One rectangular-ish and the other square. I would guess those are the LED notification and light sensors. Just speculating, though.

Is this the youtube video, pt21? I can’t open it on the computer I’m using right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce_oEzSosic

  11. Watch this video to see front facing camera. It doesn’t come up until 6:10 in the video. You can clearly see that it is looking at the guy video taping the segment.

  12. the problem right now is until 2.2 comes out i wouldnt get anything except the nexus one cause thats probably gonna be the first phone to get 2.2 or the droid only cause it gots stock android and those 2 will be the first to get the update enless it releases with 2.2 after 2.2 i dont think there will be a problem anymore cause there suppose to put all system apps in the market atleast thats the rumor

  13. Can’t wait to go check this phone out. i will probably end up getting the Nexus but this phone just might sway my decision.

  14. If it comes out before the EVO (for AT&T or whomever), would that make it the first Android phone w/a front facing camera and/or 720p recording? That’d be interesting, tho I don’t care too much for either…. :p At ‘least we know the phone isn’t stuck in limbo tho. I’m not terribly concerned about 2.2… Can a always root it and flash a new ROM if it sells well and attracts devs, at worst it gets 2.2 eventually, which should address the whole issue once and for all. I’m hoping AT&T picks this up sooner rather than later.

  15. I love the evo for all its features and sense UI but this phone comes in at a close 2nd due to its specs and yes it does have a front facing camera….I just hate their wanna be iphone ui they use…I wanna see if u can disable it and just use stock android 2.1….but this only mattaers if and only if evo dissapoints(doubt it) however this phone is my back up plan…getting tired of my droid already and iphone HD….is a yawn to me anyways

  16. At least it doesn’t have HTC SenseLESS UI. Why do companies have to put their faggotry all over phones? I want Android. That’s it.

  17. sorry guys, but where the hell do you see any LED Flash ???

  18. WOW, wasn’t really too excited about this phone JUST because of the UI, the videos some of you guys posted, however, made me change my mind on it.

If rumor is true that its coming to T-Mobile, Then i’ll consider buying it. I’m just waiting for Froyo to come installed on some phones, and i kind of want a high-end phone with a physical keyboard :-\

  19. This one will sway me from the EVO. I like the idea of GSM network and not AT&T better (which leaves T-mobile). Will see what the cost will be between the two however.

  20. My question is: this or the Dell streak please answer

  21. @Quentyn Kennemer

Yep, I would’ve done earlier, blocked at work though. Here it is at about 6.10 in, he talks about it, and presses “self shot”, activating the front camera :)

  22. http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=198072

Expansys claims UK customers can expect the device to ship in 38 days.

    So Approximate 1st June release?

I hope so and I hope T-Mobile UK have it as my upgrade is due 8th June.

  23. root will bring it up to date :p haha

  24. if this hits ATT I’m dropping my N1, the reception has been getting worse.

  25. sorry guys, but where the hell do you see any LED Flash ???

  26. I’m waiting for a HTC phone, that looks like a Legend, but with Galaxy i9000 hardware specs.

  27. the problem right now is until 2.2 comes out i wouldnt get anything except the nexus one cause thats probably gonna be the first phone to get 2.2 or the droid only cause it gots stock android and those 2 will be the first to get the update enless it releases with 2.2 after 2.2 i dont think there will be a problem anymore cause there suppose to put all system apps in the market atleast thats the rumor

  28. Not interested on this phone simply because its a Samsung. They always come out with great products with revolutionary features but they never support them and later come out with something else instead, just like LG
