This is cool news! I work in the Army's training development field, and there's work being done right now (not by me, unfortunately) to make training materials electronically available via handheld devices such as the iPhone or iTouch. This would replace bulky pocketbooks and the like by utilizing something that many Soldiers already own or are familiar with. I actually tried to recommend Android to one of the individuals involved with this initiative, but they just kind of frowned and said it had already been considered and dismissed for various reasons. Some reasons mentioned are that any Army-issued devices can't have cameras, and the hardware has to be developed in the US in order for the Army to acquire it. Apparently Apple can do this or already does. I think some other stuff mentioned were stability/crashing issues and being more vulnerable to viruses. My opinion? I think the individuals behind this are just apple fanboys and were happy to quickly dismiss it. Maybe this push by DARPA will make them think twice.
