Google has refused to allow the market to be installed on modded android firmware releases. Aside from google’s inane restrictions the market itself is completely gimped out. No web search. The app itself is marginally useful for releasing software and heaven help you if you want to search for an app and you don’t know the name. I am looking forward to a universal app store that is openly licensed and has multiple sources (kind of like debian’s apt sources) and provides real features to the developers.

Hey guys come on, Google Market is not available in many countries because of the Google restrictions ( eg. many European countries) and I don’t live in US and I can’t use Google Market, so thanks General Mobile’s endeavor

Well, if Google isn’t going to do anything to prevent the splintering of App stores, then the developers should not post their products to alternate stores. Keep it all in the Google Marketplace.

Otherwise, this is going down a dangerous and sloppy road.

Actually, as a developer I welcome the splintering of the market. Google’s market is pretty good but it has severe usability and feature problems not to mention the licensing issues. Google has refused to allow the market to be installed on modded android firmware releases. Aside from google’s inane restrictions the market itself is completely gimped out. No web search. The app itself is marginally useful for releasing software and heaven help you if you want to search for an app and you don’t know the name. I am looking forward to a universal app store that is openly licensed and has multiple sources (kind of like debian’s apt sources) and provides real features to the developers. There are a number of alternative market apps that are being developed and I am interested in promoting any that improves over the Google branded market.

Features needed:
Better Search
ability to upgrade firmware from the market
ability to provide changelogs (other than in the decription)
subscription based purchases
official web client
ability to link to other apps in each app details
better developer console (web)
android developer console as and android app
more screenshots

if you are interested in creating a repository send me an email at android@swehes.com. If the interest is big enough and enough ppl are committed, we can make it so the developers will come out a top on this madness. One place developers pay to and they get a bigger portion of their sales. Other “markets” pay a connection fee to the repository and the price that the developers set for their app. Everyone Win. :)

Hey I’m new to Android my contract is up in Feb and I was looking to get the Eris. Now the market, and Gen mobile are different? Why have so many stores? Why not one store with sections for different Android OS versions?

This is getting silly! Why can’t apps go on the regular market with some searchable piece for the phone or carrier to stand out? With developers not being able to keep up with all the new markets, the user is the one that is going to lose out.

Uggh, the app store splintering is far worse than that of Android itself! Google definitely needs to rein this situation in and standardize the app store. Maybe make it one of the stipulations for using Android…

another one? Seriously?

They need to just work with the android market and pull apps from there if they really need to have their own store. Im not about to try to make sure my apps are in every one of these rinky dink markets.
