@Brandon, When you set the orientation, leave the end of your in-use threshold below 90.(I like mine at about 70) Your phone will be at about that angle in your pocket or in a holster.

Has anyone though of the problem of running this app while your phone is holstered? Wouldn't it keep your phone screen on while holstered or even just sitting in your pocket?

I guess you would have to open the app and disable it every time you plan to move with your phone and not use it. I could see this greatly affecting your battery level if it keeps your screen on constantly.

I like the idea of wanting to license this to handset producers. I would suggest a 'learning' feature where the user doesn't have to configure its phone. I would keep the app free, enable collection of data by default and develop the crap out of it. Make it a smart app with the use of the proximity sensor as well...

Keep it up!

Just a quick note. I use it in tandem with AutoLock. This way my screen goes off very shortly after I set down my phone (but not while I'm holding it), but I don't have to unlock it until after it's been off for 20 minutes. As I see it, it's a continuum from full use to totally off.

Installed it last night after reading this review. Not too bad once I figured out which setting/phone angle would work when I put the phone to my ear. Like a lot of people, when the phone is being tilted somewhere between the portrait and landscape mode, Screebl sees it as "not in use".

This really is the next best thing for me, since Autolock is a paid app, which is not accessible to me in my region yet.

Thanks for the review.

@Jer - it really depends on you usage patterns. I see some benefit on my phone. Look at keyeslabs.com for a study that I did using my G1.

So, is the consensus that this app really isn't going to be much, if any, benefit to phones with physical keyboards like the G1 with it's plagued battery life?

It's free so I may give it a go, but to be honest with you, the way my Eris is set up I'm not sure this app would help me out too much more.

My backlight is set to 30 seconds, AutoLock set at 30 minutes, Advanced Task Manager with the one-click short cut on my home screen set to "close all non-excluded apps" then I press the End button to "sleep" the phone. Yes, those last 2 steps take 5 seconds and 2 presses but no biggie.

Again, I probably will give it a shot to see if there is something I'm missing.

@David Keyes - nice back yard, I must say. I am a city rat right now and I can only wish for such lush greens behind my house.

I also had another tiny idea that might (or might not) interest you for the future. Are you familiar with the application "Keep Screen"? It keeps the screen on for certain applications that the user defines (I use it for Google Maps for instance). If you integrate such a feature you would easily appeal even more to users because now they'll have a 2in1 solution. At least that is my opinion.

I know it is a long shot, but you could also integrate a timer for background apps. Some apps uselessly run in the background and drain the battery/processing power. Maybe you could let the user define which apps should be killed (and suppressed) after a certain period of time and only be allowed to run after the user has manually launch them. Upon launch the timer would reset and after the user is done using the app the process would start over.

I know this is not the place for such a feedback, but I would love to have a better running phone and I can't make apps... but I have ideas, most of them useless, some not so much.

@Arno Those woods are my back yard, and yes, it's also where I work on my manifesto. :) I have lots of plans for Screebl 2.0, including integration with Locale, configurable docking semantics, auto-lock on turning the phone upside down, and others. Glad you like Screebl.

Seems quite nice so far. I would say the idea is great and I hope it does well at ADC2. Good job, David Keyes.

@David Keyes - the video kind of got me by surprise... In the woods. Really!? :) A bit disturbing if you ask me. Were you busy burying a body or smth..? :)

But jokes aside - great job! I hope the free version will stay free, yet functional. Have you considered adding features like making the phone behave in certain ways depending to whether it is plugged in or not? Say, you plug it in and let's say Wi-Fi automatically turns on, or screen timeout period automatically goes to a longer period (or never, depending on the user's preference)....?

Screebl seems to be best at extending battery life on phones that do NOT have a physical keyboard. This is because on keyboardless phones, the accelerometers are always on, and Screebl adds minimal overhead beyond the orientation sensors. Devices WITH keyboards will likely see less benefit, or perhaps even reduced net battery. This is because on devices with keyboards, the opening of the keyboard is used as the cue to flip orientation to landscape.

That being said, I have not had the chance to evaluate Screebl on the Droid.

Of course, you get the added benefit of not having annoying screen timeouts keyboard or not.
