Cool! Somebody who reads these agreements.
I was just reading the SDK download agreement and was wondering what 'developer credentials' were. It's amazing I can't find anything on the Internet saying what they are. I guess they've become so common place that people just accept whatever they are and do what Google tells them.
Your article is the first I've found that gives me a hint. Is credentials a polite way of Google saying 'credit card number'.

Lemmings.

Probably people are so used to them that they've drifted into realm of just being accepted. So I get a hint from what you wrote, that's Googles polite way of saying give us your credit card number.

I was being a "good liitle developer" and went to sign the distribution agreement and found this...the ADP2: http://android.brightstarcorp.com/index.htm
My apologies if this is old news. Sucks for me as I just got the ADP1 less than a month ago :-(

I agree, I think most of the legal talk is to protect them in the event they do need to ban someone. They want to have their basis covered.

I also agree that a developer should be banned if their app is somehow misleading (with intent) or contains spyware etc (not sure if that's possible as I'm not sure what Google's approval process is).

I'd be seriously surpised if Google hasn't always had a clause stating that they reserve the right to ban developers they deem not to be "in good standing." It's a fairly standard cover your ass clause and likely kicks in if you either have repeated takedowns or a particulary heinous one. Google doesnt really care if people make crappy apps as long as they aren't malicious to the user or damaging to them as a company.
