One thing the iPhone definitely seems to have gotten right is supporting UMTS frequencies 850, 1900, and 2100 allowing for major interop. The Galaxy's been for sale on other sites for quite some time and the prices have dropped considerably in that time, although I don't know if they were ever as high as $590.
