Unlocked Phones and Total Randomness
| by Rob Jackson on June 24th, 2009 |
While I’m waiting for some HTC Hero Videos to upload to YouTube I thought I’d share a moment of complete randomness. One thing I’ve learned about London during my time here is that the city is very old and rich in history. But apprently nowhere during that history did they invent or figure out proper road signs.
Apparently some stores like to keep with the city’s theme of complete sign randomness by following suit with their own business:

Mobile Phone Unlocking/Sales/Repairs, Dry Cleaning Specialists and Shoe Repair all in one convenient location! You can kill 2 birds with one stone and Chuck Norris can kill 2 stones with one bird… but nobody can do like Smartline does.
Stay tuned for those videos!

Yeah, that’s nothing weird over here. The barbers up the road is also an internet cafe and a mobile phone accessories store.

That’s almost as crazy as a country selling guns and beer in the same store! ;)

@JJ – it was all in good fun. Yes, I am somewhat ignorant to foreign countries and hope to travel more. I loved London and already cannot wait to come back.
That being said I think the street signs and street identification system is confusing and posed my opinion in a sarcastic (and what I thought was funny) manner. Loosen up… I’d be happy to laugh along with folks making fun of the United States for things that are admittedly wonky here. Plenty of material to poke on for sure.
By the way, everyone FROM London who asked me where I was fun had the SAME thing to say when I explained I was from Baltimore:
“Oh yeah, I just started watching The Wire. Don’t a lot of people die there?”
Great… hahahahhahahaha

This is perfectly normal for the UK, in fact they should also do Key Cutting.
The best example i have seen (in central London) did Cheap International Calls, Internet, shoe repairs, key cutting, dry cleaning, phone unlocking/repairs and accessories.

As for road signs, yes it is confusing for Americans because our streets developed organically rather than being laid out in the grid system like most Ameriacn Ciies.

Street signs in the UK are terrible, all that history getting in the way. My favourite sign so far was in Dublin though, advertising free gruel.

Not for nothing but …most americans don’t have the luxury of traveling internationally …its not a tunnel away or a dirt cheap airline ticket away either …I don’t think its very fair to respond like that considering that there are differances and there are just as many weird things in the us as everywhere else …I have traveled alot and the one comman denomenator is that everywhere ya go in the world there is always something weird enough to laugh about….I don’t know if you have been to america or not but if you havn’t you should give us a chance we might not all turn out to be the devil that you view us being in your mind
