iPhone Running Android? Windows Mobile, Too?

by Rob Jackson on November 30th, 2008

Since Android is an Open Source operating system you could theoretically run it virtually on other handsets and platforms. Just as your Mac can run Windows virtually, the folks at iphone-dev.org have mashed up a solution for the iPhone to run Linux. Porting Android over would be the logical next step.

And so the quest for [...]

G1 Auto Screen Rotation Fix (UnOfficial)

by Rob Jackson on November 30th, 2008

Nearly every tool, utility and application that we’ve tested has a fairly standard list of complaints and among them are the fact that (1) When you open the keyboard, your “place” in the application is lost and, (2) When you change the direction you are holding the screen, its orientation does not change.
Now, thanks to [...]

The Microsoft Zune Phone Is Coming

by Rob Jackson on November 26th, 2008

Industry insiders are claiming that in 2009, Microsoft will release a mobile phone at either the Consumer Electronics Show in January or the 3GSM Conference in February. This isn’t a stunning revelation – the concept of a Zune Phone has churned in the rumor mill ever since Apple had a runaway success with the iPhone. [...]

Android Roundup – MIA Edition

by Rob Jackson on November 25th, 2008

Regular readers of phandroid and AndroidForums members are probably wondering WTF and we’ll tell you – a little data center issue yanked the sites off the web for a full day and we’re just now trying to get back in the groove of things. Rather than make post after post of yesterdays news, we’re bringing [...]

G1 is now dubbed “G3.5″ – Headphones Rejoice

by Spencer Gardner on November 20th, 2008

It seems one of the largest gripes over the G1 has partially (if not mostly)subsided today – the G1 is now shipping with an obligatory USB to 3.5mm headphone adapter. And although it’s not the most minimalistic version that could’ve been used, I’m getting a sneaking suspicion that new G1 owners will be more than [...]

T-Mobile Chooses Yahoo Over Google

by Rob Jackson on November 20th, 2008

In a surprising move, T-Mobile has chosen Yahoo’s OneSearch search engine on its phones according to a Yahoo executive. Considering the relationship between Google and T-Mobile with the launch of the G1 – the first ever Android phone – you would expect Google to have somewhat of an inside track on the deal.
But as [...]

DoCoMo & KTF Android Phone Coming 2009

by Rob Jackson on November 19th, 2008

The Nikkei business daily broke, Reuters reported and Phandroid is further relaying that DoCoMo – Japan’s largest mobile carrier – is jointly creating an Android based handset for release in 2009. They’re teaming up with manufacturer KTF, a company of which they have 10% ownership.
Details on the potential/possible/probable handset are sparse… or perhaps non-existent would [...]

G1 Multi-Touch Exists, Amputated

by Rob Jackson on November 18th, 2008

You know that cool multi-touch feature that iPhone folks brag about? We’ll admit… it IS pretty cool. Did you know that G1 is capable of multi-touch, too? You probably didn’t and for good reason.
The Android OS has multi-touch capabilities written into it but they are commented out. For non-developers this means the code is there, [...]

Browser Based Flash Coming to Android

by Spencer Gardner on November 18th, 2008

It looks like our nifty, new little OS is getting another one-up over our favorite Apple device in the coming months. Adobe has now all but announced that one of their flagship services, Flash, will be coming to an Android browser near you (let’s hope it’s very near you!). Specifically, Adobe announced forthcoming support for [...]

White T-Mobile G1 Delayed?

by Rob Jackson on November 16th, 2008

According to the guys at TMO News, who consistently churn out inside TMO info, the White T-Mobile G1 has been slightly delayed and probably won’t appear until AFTER Thanksgiving. Apparently its a paint chipping issue that is causing the delay… but me-thinks a Black Friday White G1 launch would work some wonders for TMO.

They say [...]

Google Mobile Audio Search

by Rob Jackson on November 14th, 2008

Google isn’t foolish enough to think that Android is the end-all, be-all of the mobile world. In fact, fostering growth among many platforms has been a key initiative of the Big G and they continue to release new and innovative apps on platforms like iPhone and BlackBerry OS BEFORE it comes out for Android.
One example [...]

Facebook App Hits Android Market (3rd Party)

by Rob Jackson on November 13th, 2008

A few short weeks ago we were told not to hold our breath for a Facebook application on Android. In fact, Facebook execs themselves were heard calling Android “vaporware” and saying things like, “Android sucks, it doesn’t matter.” The more official explanation from facebook was they would rely on 3rd party developers to make Facebook [...]

Finally… I Got RC30 Update

by Rob Jackson on November 13th, 2008

I woke up at around 4:45 AM, walked down the street to get a large coffee (decaf unfortunately) and sat down at my computer to start a long and fun day of work. While I was gone, Windows had one of those highly irritating Automatic Updates that completely disregarded everything I had open and simply [...]

Visual Voice Mail Hits Android (Soon)

by Rob Jackson on November 12th, 2008

In the last few months, Visual Voice Mail has swept across nearly all carriers as an extra feature to improve your mobile experience. Why it took so long for this simple and intuitive solution to come to fruition is a huge question mark, but all that really matter is that your T-Mobile G1 will soon [...]

T-Mobile G1 Costs $144 to Manufacture

by Rob Jackson on November 12th, 2008

iSuppli Corp (iSuppli.com)has done their complete tear down of the T-Mobile G1, taking every last item needed to build that Bad Droid and tallied up how many pesos it would take to build it yourself. Actually they calculated it in dollars and the total figure was $144… 1,883 pesos if you were curious.
The $144 G1 [...]

G1 Finally Hits Wal-Mart, $179.99

by Rob Jackson on November 11th, 2008

We heard rumors a couple weeks back about the T-Mobile G1 possibly hitting Wal-Mart… and for cheaper than it was in T-Mobile Corporate stores. After a slight setback, the T-Mobile G1 is finally available at Wal-Mart as you can see on their website.

I called the Wal-Mart in Baltimore, MD asking about the price and they [...]

Debian Deviously Ported to Android, G1

by Spencer Gardner on November 10th, 2008

If increased functionality, more usability, and greater geekiness have any place in your mobile heart, this post is for you. Jay Freeman (a.k.a. Saurik)  has successfully ported Debian onto Android and the G1. Saurik is the guy that brought you (not us) Winterboard, Cydia, and Cycorder to the iPhone, so we know this is a [...]

Huawei Android Phone Coming Early 2009

by Rob Jackson on November 8th, 2008

Huawei’s Director of Marketing for the terminals division – James Chen – recently announced that the company would be launching an Android Phone in the first half of 2009. Huawei is best known for low-end handsets and when you combine a struggling economy with the $Free Open Source Android, they could have a recipe for [...]

by Rob Jackson on November 8th, 2008

The Android Developers Blog continued their look inside some of the top Android Applications, including interviews with the developers who made them. This time around they looked at the iMeem Android Application made by Allan Hsu and the Amazon Music Application made by Casey Langen.

The iMeem App utilizes the SQL Lite Databases, many regular expressions, [...]

Android RC30 Updates Your G1

by Rob Jackson on November 7th, 2008

In the very early morning, it appears AndroidForum members first reported their G1’s being updated with the newest Android Over-The-Air update. It patches the apparent “jailbreaking” bypass that the current OS allows which allowed l33t h4×0rz to tap directly into the Android OS at the root level.
While it took most folks a long and varied [...]
