When they go to T-Mobile, they’re going to ask for a Google phone not an HTC Dream.

So calling it a G1 is the SMART business move. Calling it an “HTC Dream that runs an operating system called Android that was created by Google” is a recipe for confusion and failure.

Other carriers like Sprint who will hop on the bandwagon later are going to have a hard time naming their phone once G1 becomes synonymous with the Google phone. T-mobile can rename their line, G2, G3, etc no matter who manufactures the phone later. What will others call it to emphasize that their phone too – is a Google phone?

What sounds better? T-Mobile G1 or HTC Dream….???

Can you imagine being drunk and someone askin you about your phone and is call the HTC Dream.

Friend: (DAMN!!! I should take him/her home so they dont get hurt. And damn he/she doesn remember the name of the phone.)

You: ???… Ummm the K-G-B Warfare…

Friend: Ok lets take you home.

You: Home???… Thats what my phone is called.

Friend: No Lets take you home now your really drunk.

You: No Officer i only had 1 drink… Im not drunk.

Friend: No its me now come on get in the car.

You: What?? No sicko

Friend: What?? Get in the freakin car drunky.

You: Mom I want to be here you never let me do anythin!!

Friend: WTF??? (Friend gets out of car and throws you in the car and takes you home.)

You: Is this your house???

Friend: No its yours stupid.(Friend wash your face and puts you in bed)

You: Are we going to have sex now???

See what happens when a cell phone’s name can do the friends didn find out the name til a week later.

Good luck with that. My girlfriend and her friends already refer to my HTC phone as my “google phone” since I use it to look up directions and other info. Lost? Why don’t you check your google phone? Where’s the closest pizza place open at this hour? Check your google phone!

I can see both conversations happening:

Dream-
Friend: What kind of phone is that?
Me: T-mobile Dream.
Friend: hahaha what the hell kind of name is that?
Someone must have been smoking some good
stuff when they cam up with that.

G1-
Friend: What kind of phone is that?
Me:Its the T-mobile G1.
Friend: Oh I see. Thats real tight. Let me see it.

A: “Is this an iPhone?”
B: “No, it’s the Dream. Much better.”

A: “Is this an iPhone?”
B: “No this is the G1.”
A: (snoring)

And I don’t mind the logo placements, it’s not like they’re all large and in sequence. They’re small and well-placed on the device. T-Mobile’s is next to the earpiece because you’re using them to make the calls, Google’s is on the back like Apple’s on the iPhone because it’s their baby, and HTC’s is “on the inside” so to speak because they manufactured it (and it shouldn’t be visible most of the time anyways.)
